An Introduction
After years of hearing that San Francisco allegedly has more bars per capita than any other U.S. city, I have decided to see if one person can actually drink at every bar in the City. I’m going neighborhood by neighborhood, skipping only wine bars and restaurants, and hopefully having some amazing booze fueled adventures on the way.
I’m starting with what may turn out to be one of the most intense neighborhoods first, the Tenderloin. Yes, most of us have enjoyed live music at the Hemlock or warbled karaoke while seeing double at Deco, but what lurks deep within the seething underbelly of the TL?

I’d like that! I have no idea when I will be doing the Inner Sunset, but there are a lot of great bars there, so I am pretty excited about it.

What a neat idea! I wrote for MyOpenBar.com’s SF edition when I first moved here and the Tenderloin pub crawls I went on were epic. I hope you get a chance to some of the unknown, ‘underground’ spots that fill the city and the Chinatown to Tenderloin route.
The city with the highest per capita bars (people to pub) is actually La Crosse, Wisconsin. The state as a whole, I believe, also has the most bars than any other state. There are three times more taverns per person than the rest of the country.

I had never heard that about Wisconsin before today. I guess it makes sense with those frozen winters.

It’s just one person, that’s me, and I had never heard of that site. I have been talking about this with friends for years and had never heard mention of it. I’m not a journalist, this is something I am doing for fun, so I’m not really sure where due diligence comes into it. I still think it’s a perfectly valid goal for me to set for myself.

Also may want to track bar openings and closings over the course of the experiment, so on the day it ends there’s not a gotcha of “wait, there are 7 bars you haven’t been to!”

I look forward to reading about your encounters with bar folk across the city. My family’s owned a dive-y bar in the Mission for more than 50 years (yep, we’re that rare breed of city dweller they called “native San Franciscan”). Can’t wait to see what you think of the Mission drinking establishments!

I love Mission dive bars, and the (Outer) Mission is where I learned to tend bar myself. It will always have a special place in my heart. It might be a few months before I work my way over there, but I look forward to it.
