The Hemlock Tavern is where rockers go to rock. The bar has decently priced drinks and a bad-ass jukebox, but more importantly there is a dark back room that plays host to some of the most bizarre and fringe bands one can find in San Francisco.
For the bar patrons who would rather not throw down a few bucks to support hard working musicians, there is a giant bar and smoking area in which one can hang and check out the hot rockers without paying cover. But for those who dig bands on the edge, $5 is generally enough to travel through the Hemlock’s portal into bands unknown.
Like the rest of Polk Gulch, Hemlock Tavern is insanely packed with the Marina and B&T crowd on weekend nights. But if you can get there for happy hour on an off night, it’s still a chill place to down a frosty PBR, and the friendly bartenders will keep you company while making sure any creeps who wander in off the street don’t harass you.
