Can one person drink at every bar in San Francisco?

QBAR – Castro

Walking into QBAR on Harvey Milk Day was like stepping through a time warp back into the 1970’s. Patrons packed the dance floor and sang along to disco hits while scenes from Harvey Milk’s political career and the movie Milk were played on all of the TV screens. It was eerie listening to disco divas belting out their best while watching video of the riots, but it also felt good to celebrate what a huge positive impact Harvey Milk made on the City.

The specialty cocktails at QBAR are fantastic, and quite affordable during happy hour. My friend had a drink with blackberries, mint, and champagne that was to die for. Their beer selection is also excellent, and they carry only microbrews. I think my favorite thing about QBAR though is the smoking patio, which gives one a great view of Castro street. I passed the time waiting for my friends to show up sitting on the patio and people watching, making new friends with the chatty smokers.

Just loving every single report, Intrepid One!

Wasn’t the atmosphere in the Castro magical yesterday? So many smiles, so much hope.

Little history lesson for ya: QBar, in a long-ago previous incarnation, was called Castro Street Station. It was one of two bars (Headquarters directly across the street) that opened at 6am. You can imagine the wild scene at that hour as all us late-night denizens migrated up Castro Street from the 24-hour donut shoppe to these bars for our first pinball game of the day, as dawn broke and we sipped our first cranberry juice.

Good times, never to be repeated….
