Can one person drink at every bar in San Francisco?

L’Amour Nightclub – Chinatown

By the time we stumbled upon L’amour, my 30th bar, my ability to count was a bit impaired. L’amour was an unexpected treat, a bar I had never heard of on a small side street. This is all that one can see from street level:

I truly had no idea what we were in for with this bar. We descended the mysterious red stairwell to find a giant room filled with maybe 40 or more identical couches facing each other in pairs.

It turns out L’amour is a Chinese karaoke bar, possibly a hostess bar as well. The patrons were outnumbered by the friendly female bar staff who made us feel welcome and gave us paper plates full of free peanuts. There are giant screens all around the room for karaoke, and the bar was a striking mixture of metal and red lights.

The bar was somewhat David Lynchian on a quiet Sunday night, but I’m sure it’s quite the party on a Friday or Saturday.
