Can one person drink at every bar in San Francisco?

Geary Club – Tenderloin

Here’s the thing about the Geary Club…I don’t wan’t you going there. It’s absolutely perfect as is, and I’m afraid new patrons would upset the delicate balance that makes it work. You probably wouldn’t even like it. Fancy drinks, they ain’t got ’em. Service? Eh. Atmosphere- just really, really smokey. The beers aren’t even cheap.

So uh, yeah. That’s all I’m going to say about the Geary Club.

I leave you with a photo of the decor in the ladies’ room:

The first time I went to the Geary Club (at the recommendation of a friend who lives on that block) was odd. All four people (including the bartender) were having a smoke break and showed no inclination to re-enter the bar or serve beer until they were finished. I was tempted to say “I’ll come back later,” but waited until they were done. It was pretty awkward, especially because I don’t smoke.

  2. Thank you for not listing this in the TL section. God forbid people actually find out about it.

i lived across the street from this place in the 80’s and whenever the old lady and i got to donnybrooking i’d hole away in here. never a regular, just 2-3 hours once or twice a month… but by the 3rd time the barmaid knew my pour (double jim beam and a coors), and since i never said a word, just sat staring THROUGH the giant’s game she could see i was in pain and wanted to help… but none of this cheers crap; i didn’t need to pour my heart out, just the booze in, so jimjim would be a healthy 5-6 oz… you can say the GC saved our marriage. i never laid a hand on her (ONE OF THESE DAYS ALICE!) and a few years ago we took our two teenagers to check out our old stomping ground (kids, meet the ‘loin!)… i was crushed to see that neon martini glass was no longer there and am heartened to know it was only the sign that went the way of all flesh.
